Who will win Ragga Soca 2013?

With the announcement of Ragga Soca finalists by the Carnival Development Corporation, 9 artistes will square off against the reigning monarch Lornette ‘Fya Empress’ Nedd for the coveted title of 2013 Ragga Soca Monarch. If you don’t know who they are, here are the artistes and their songs along with my predictions for Saturday 6th July 2013.

  1. Shernelle “Skarpyon” Williams — Hammer & Conchs
Trying to reclaim his glory from 2011 is Shernelle ‘Skarpyon’ Williams. Known for his flamboyant performances, I’m sure that he will bring a performance that will be hard to beat by his competitors. His 2013 tune is not only catchy but keeps you rocking from side to side from start to end. This for sure is a top three pick for this year's competition.

  1. Shaunelle Mc Kenzie — Up in dat
Celebrating 20 years in the carnival arena, Shaunelle has once again this year brought the tune that is the talk of the town. ‘Up in dat’ not only makes you want to move but highlights the biggest fetes in SVG as well internationally while making you want to put your hands in the air and  wave them! With this song Shaunelle really proves that she is a party animal and the Queen of Bacchanal.

  1. Orande “Bomani” Charles — Wine for your life
With the hopes of copping another crown, Orande Charles better known as ‘Bomani’ brings this ballad which makes any woman want to take the ‘Wine of your life’. With his sultry voice and a smile described by women as ‘irresistible’, Bomani has to bring the performance of the lifetime with this song to stage to beat his competitors and not cop a second place!

  1. Hance John — Sunrise
Hance’s crossover from the Junior Soca scene to the Soca arena has seen him bring the best of his youth to the stage of Victoria Park. With a smooth voice and some of the best written lyrics, Hance will once again prove that he is a force to be reckoned with. While it may be a long shot to see him winning the crown, we see Hance finishing in the top five of this year’s competition.

  1. Tamisha Nicholls-Lewis “Vincy whining boss”
Winning the new Ragga Soca song competition, Tamisha has this year burst onto the scene showing that she is one artiste who is impossible to be ignored.  With five songs out this Carnival, this young songstress is showing why she has a future in the Soca arena. While we see her delivering a great performance for the show, the question is can she bring all the power to beat the likes of Skarpyon and Fya Empress?

  1. Danielle “Daneel” Veira — Till dawn
One of the female Soca Dans, Daneel this year brings a new flavour to Ragga Soca combining club beats with steel pan and has you moving ‘til dawn’ if you’re a true Carnival enthusiast. With such a good song, we look forward to see what performance she will bring to the stage at Victoria and if it can earn her a top 3 position.  This song however will be a great club song for the rest of the year for sure!

  1. Johnny “Johnny Rebel” Hall — Patruna
Back for another year is veteran in the soca business Johnny Rebel. Known for his eccentric lyrics, Johnny once again prove that he is a rebel with his song titled “Patruna.”
(This song is not available on Youtube or Soundcloud)

  1. Raeon “Fete King Madzart” Primus — Light up the sky
The Fete King this year brings a new feel to Ragga Soca by incorporating club beats into his 2013 hit “Light up the Sky”. He collaborates with his fellow soca artiste Tamisha on this track although they will perform separately at the Ragga Soca Monarch Finals. While this song is great for a club or house party, I doubt it will receive a great crowd response at Victoria Park.  I see this taking off at one of the international festivals like Caribana or Labour Day, not Vincy Mas.

  1. Recardo “Recka” Wilson & Maxwell “Tajoe” Francis - “Butt me with respect”
One of the more controversial Ragga Soca songs for this year comes from Recka and Tajoe. While condoning cheating, cheating has to happen in the context of respect aka money. This song has been taking over the airwaves and is one of the most anticipated performances for the Ragga Soca finals. I expect this song to receive a great crowd response but will that be enough to propel them to number 1?

  1. Lornette “Fya Empress” Nedd  - Ah Ketch it
The reigning monarch in Ragga Soca, Fya Empress this year has come out with a vengeance to take home all the crowns in 2013. With a catchy tune, a Lady Gaga type wardrobe and a performance that is going to take Victoria Park by storm, she has crowd appeal on her side and will be hard to dethrone this year. The only question for 2013 is can she can ‘ketch it’ again? My prediction is she just might!

My top 5 predictions in no specific order: Skarpyon, Fya Empress, Bomani, Hance & Shaunelle. We just have to wait until Saturday July 6th to see who will be the 2013 Ragga Soca Monarch!
